Prowlers Take Game 1 in Overtime

By Aaron Martin

Danville, IL - The playoffs bring a different brand of hockey. The players play harder, the coaches get more animated, and fans are on their toes from start to finish. Game 1 of the FHL Playoffs between the Prowlers and the Dashers brought all of that and more.

The first period started with a bang as the home team Dashers, fully healthy and fully loaded started the scoring. Justin Levac got the puck past Michael Santaguida off a pass from Ahmed Mahfouz a little over 10 minutes in. Just four minutes later, Sean Reynolds would take a pass into the slot past the outstretched glove of Santaguida to put the Dashers up by 2. Matt Graham got the Prowlers on the board with only over a minute left, to make it 2-1 heading into the first intermission.

Matt Graham would score again shortly before the halfway mark of the second period to knot it up at 2. The Mahfouz and Levac connection would go again with the same shot and scenario to make it 3-2. Only 2 minutes later on a power play, Mahfouz passed to Levac who sent a slap shot towards Santaguida. The shot bounced off of Jimmy Soper to put the Dashers up by 2 again. The Prowlers answered back under a minute later when former Dasher Jonathon Juliano would take a pass from Matt Graham and send a wrister past Matt Kaludis to end the period with a score of 4-3.

The third period would see one lone goal coming from Juliano for his second of the night. A puck over the outstretched leg of Kaludis would tie the game and send it into sudden death overtime.

At only 27 seconds into overtime Matt Kaludis found himself fending off two attackers that got the better of him. Matt Robertson took a pass from Austin Daae to give Port Huron the victory and bring them one step closer to the Finals.

Game 2 of the Commissioner's Cup Playoffs is Saturday evening in Port Huron. If necessary, Game 3 will also be in Port Huron on Sunday.
