SHAWN JOHNSON; WATERTOWN’S GET-IT-DONE GUY

Watertown, NY - Shawn Johnson is a little busy these days.

“I started with the Wolves as an intern in 2016,” recalled Johnson, Watertown’s assistant director of operations.   “My first season I learned all about small business and sports management under head coach Phil Esposito. I was given many responsibilities including managing equipment, assisting with gameday operations, and keeping track of player transactions.”

Johnson, who travels with the team, also took on additional roles such as player housing, doctor and dental appointments, and travel plans.

After graduating high school in 2009, Shawn joined the U.S. Army as a military police officer. “I was deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan,” said Johnson.  “I was part of Operation Enduring Freedom. In 2014 I was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army after completing my five year contract obligation.”

After his time in the Army, Shawn went to college at SUNY Jefferson to pursue a degree in sports management.

“My second season with the team is the most memorable so far,” Johnson recalled.   “Ownership decided not to bring back Esposito and instead hired Trevor Karasiewicz. Trevor and I immediately hit it off. We worked very well together. He’s a true professional and knows how to assemble a talented hockey team.” 

The hard work payed off; in 2017-2018 Watertown won the Commissioner’s Cup final against Port Huron in 4 games. The Wolves became the first FHL team to win two championships.

“I’m in my third season of professional hockey and still with the Wolves,” said Johnson. “During the summers I assist with marketing and sales along with Trevor and our marketing director Lexi Norris. Even though the players are not here, we keep the Wolves’ brand involved in the community.”  The Wolves were represented at all of Watertown’s block parties and attended Mountainfest, featuring country music star Chris Jansen.

“We also made appearances at the Jefferson County Fair as well as Relay for Life,” said Johnson. “After winning a championship, gaining sponsors and fans became easier.”

Watertown (7-4-1) is currently in second place in the FHL.  “Our goal this year is to go back-to-back and win a third championship,” said Shawn.
