DEREK NANSEN JOIN'S THE FPHL OFFICIATING SUPERVISORS STAFF

The Federal Prospects Hockey League has announced the hiring of Former NHL Linesman Derek Nansen as a member of the FPHL Officiating Supervisors Staff.  

Nansen was born December 6, 1971 in Ottawa Ontario Canada. As most young kids in Canada began playing hockey at a very young age, always with dreams of making it professionally as a player, Derek continued his playing career till the age of 19 playing one year of JR ‘B’. While officiating different JR divisions at the same time.

During his playing career, Nansen started officiating at the age of 11. He continued to work his way through the minor hockey levels until he was given the opportunity to work the Ontario Hockey league (1991-2002). 

Below are some of the key dates of advancement through Nansen's career:

April 2001
World Championships — Nuremberg, Cologne/Hanover, Germany.
Hockey Canada (CHL) had selected Nansen to work The World Championship in Germany Working the Gold medal game.

August 2001
First Invite to the NHL Exposure Camp

Spring 2002
- Selected by IIHF to work 2002 Winter Olympics (Hockey)— Salt Lake City.
- Selected to work CHL Memorial Cup in Guelph.
- Selected to work  AHL Calder Cup finals

August 2002
- Second invite to NHL Exposure camp.  
At the conclusion of the weekend, The NHL offered Derek a position on staff full time.


After spending 23 season with the NHL, Nansens career came to an end last spring when he stepped off the ice for the last time and retired. After many years employed with the NHL, Derek Nansen has retired with 23 years of service, 1470 regular season games and 65 playoff games.


FPHL Director of Officiating Paul Jene stated, “Derek is the 4th member of our supervisors staff that has previously worked in the National Hockey League.  This brings even more quality education & coaching to our staff.  It doesn’t matter what level you are at, coaching & supervision is needed at every level of the sport all the way up to the NHL.  You never stop learning and progressing at what you do.  It is a key part of our game.  And our officiating supervisors have been outstanding.  He is another very welcomed addition to our staff and we look forward to working with him."



The FPHL is a Single-A Minor Professional hockey league operating in its 16th season during 2025-26.
