FPHL Kicks Off 16th Season Under New Rules and Standard of Play

Tonight kicks off the FPHL's 16th year of operations.

The FPHL board of governors unanimously voted to institute use of the National Hockey League rulebook (with FPHL variances) and full use of the National Hockey League standard of play.

Use of the National Hockey League rulebook creates a more consistent transition for players that move up through the ECHL, AHL, and hopefully the NHL systems.  However, there will still be some previously developed rules by the FPHL that the leagues BOG has chosen to continue to use.

The NHL standard of play is going to have a big effect on how the FPHL draws players to it.  The league will still be a hard hitting, tough exciting game of hockey, but will now allow the opportunity for skilled players to really showcase their abilities by tightening up stick fouls and other infractions that will essentially opened up the game for more scoring.

The FPHL will also continue with use of replay and will extend that replay to review Major & Match penalties, legitimacy of goals, and implement more criteria for coaches challenges.

The Board Of Governors has not yet allowed to mandate on specific equipment, systems, and standards, however, the FPHL has been working diligently to make sure teams supply appropriate cameras and angles for the officials to access.  All replays will be done on tablet devices at the penalty box controlled by the on-ice officials and no reviews shall take place off of a video screen or Jumbotron regardless whether the replay is in operation or not. Any coaches challenge where the camera and replay system is not working, the call on ice will stand and there will be no further coaches challenges for the remainder of the game.  However the on-ice officials will continue to attempt to review all other replay criteria as listed in the rulebook.

The new rules and standard of play will be an adjustment to everyone for a few weeks or so but the FPHL is committed to its process of training all personnel & member affiliates helping the FPHL to turn another corner in professional hockey.

The FPHL is a Single-A Minor Professional hockey league operating in its 16th season during 2025-26
