PORT HURON PROWLERS at BINGHAMTON BLACK BEARS

Burke Steals The Show

By Brooks Hill

Binghamton, NY - The Binghamton Black Bears won in a shootout on Saturday night. CJ Stubbs scored the only goal in round two of the extra period. In his professional debut, Graham Burke stopped 34 shots on goal and earned 1st Star of the Game.

For most of the game, the Black Bears and Prowlers followed the same script from Friday night. Once again, neither was able to score in the first period. Both sides had chances and Binghamton outshot Port Huron 15-6. It would end up being the only period when the Black Bears would outshoot the Prowlers.

Former Black Bear, Jamie Bucell, would start the scoring. The Prowlers held that lead for most of the second period until Binghamton finally capitalized on the power play. Chance Gorman scored his fifth of the season, tying the game at 1-1.

Both teams had their fair share of chances in the third period. In a true old-school type of battle on the ice, 60 minutes was just not enough. In fact, 65 wasn’t enough either.

Binghamton failed to convert in the overtime period, while on the man advantage. For the first team this season, both teams headed for the shootout. Captain CJ Stubbs delivered the gamewinning goal in the second spot, handing the reigns over to rookie-goalie, Graham Burke. Burke would steal the show stopping all three shooters, finishing the night with 34 saves in net. Binghamton wins 2-1 in the shootout improving to 3-0-0 and 6pts on the season.

Prowlers Get Point in Binghamton, But Fall in Shootout

By Will Wiegelman

Binghamton, NY - The Port Huron Prowlers picked up their first point of the 2026-27 season but couldn’t grab a second in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Binghamton Black Bears on October 17 in Binghamton. CJ Stubbs scored the only goal of the skills competition.

Port Huron opened the game’s scoring in the second period when Alex Johnson hustled to track down a puck skittering into the offensive zone and centered it for Jamie Bucell who beat his man and put it home.

“We chipped it out and I saw Johnny get on his horse,” Bucell said. “I saw he was going to be the first one to touch the puck so I made a break to the front of the net and called for it. He was able to make a perfect pass right on my tape.”

Chance Gorman tied it later in the frame as he streaked to the net and fired in his league-leading fifth goal of the season.

60 minutes weren’t enough and Binghamton got a power play in overtime, but Port Huron held and sent it to the shootout.

Stubbs’ winner came in the bottom of the second round.

Andrew MacLean made 30 saves and went 2-3 in the shootout for the Prowlers.

Graham Burke got the win in his pro debut after stopping 34 shots and all three Port Huron shootout attempts.

The Prowlers will look for their first win in their home opener on Oct. 23 when they welcome the Indiana Sentinels.

COLUMBUS RIVER DRAGONS at BLUE RIDGE BOBCATS

Bobcats Shorthanded Surge Seals Opening Weekend Sweep

By Brett Wiseman

Wytheville, VA - The Blue Ridge Bobcats rode a franchise record for fastest pair of shorthanded goals, scoring twice a man down in a 14-second span to cement a 3-2 win and opening weekend sweep of the Columbus River Dragons before a crowd of 1,610 at Hitachi Energy Arena on Pink in the Rink Night.

The only goal of a tight-checking opening period came off a prolonged stretch of offensive zone pressure for Columbus, when Ron Jay Peeachaw pivoted a backhand pass and found Jestin Somero all alone on the doorstep for a backdoor tap in behind Max Macchioni at the 17:45 mark of the first.

Vladislav Vlasov scored the lone goal of a tight-checking middle frame, blasting a point-blank one-timer off a great setup by Patriks Marcinkevics under the crossbar to tie the game on the power play at the 6:25 mark of the second.

Nikolai Dulak took advantage of a wild sequence of events at the Columbus attacking blue line and took off on a solo shorthanded breakaway, going forehand to backhand to beat Doug Wakelyn and make his first professsional goal the eventual game winner at the 3:26 mark of the third. 14 seconds later, Marcinkevics threw the dagger with another dazzling display of stickhandling to knife through the Columbus power play and snipe home a wrist shot from the high slot. Lare Pahtayken added a goal late with an extra attacker on and Wakelyn pulled with under a minute remaining in regulation, but Blue Ridge held on to earn the 3-2 win behind 32 saves from Macchioni.

Dulak's first pro goal earned him third star honors, while multi-point nights from Vlasov and Marcinkevics earned them second and first star honors respectively.

The 2-0 Bobcats now hit the road for their first-ever visit to Watertown, NY to face the Wolves next weekend. Both games begin at 7:05 EST and will be available on the Blue Ridge Hockey Network.

Special Teams Prove Costly as River Dragons Fall 3-2 to Bobcats

By Devin Dobek

Wytheville, VA – Looking to secure a split in their opening weekend series, the Columbus River Dragons returned to the ice Saturday against the Blue Ridge Bobcats, aiming to bounce back and spoil the home crowd’s celebration. Despite striking first and receiving a strong 41-save performance from rookie goaltender Douglas Wakelyn, Columbus was unable to overcome a pair of costly shorthanded goals, ultimately falling 3-2 to the Bobcats.

The opening period featured an up-tempo pace, with both teams generating chances and trading rushes from end to end. Wakelyn made his first professional start for Columbus, while Max Macchioni made his season debut between the pipes for Blue Ridge. Both netminders settled in early, keeping the game scoreless until the Dragons broke through late in the frame.

At 17:45, forward Jestin Somero capitalized on a feed from Ron Jay Peeaychew to put Columbus on the board and give the Dragons a 1-0 advantage. The assist marked Peeaychew’s first professional point, while Brodie Thornton picked up the secondary assist. Columbus carried the lead into the intermission, although Blue Ridge held a 16-12 edge in shots on goal. A late slashing penalty against Peeaychew gave the Bobcats a power-play opportunity that carried over into the second period.

The Dragons successfully killed off the remaining penalty time to begin the middle frame, preserving their one-goal advantage. However, another Columbus penalty proved costly. With Connor Loft serving a slashing minor, Blue Ridge capitalized in the final second of the power play as Vladislav Vlasov buried a cross-crease feed to even the score at 1-1.

The game grew increasingly physical as the period progressed, with both sides exchanging words and battling after the whistle. Late in the frame, Carson Andreoli was assessed an interference penalty, giving Columbus a power-play opportunity to begin the third period. Despite the tie on the scoreboard, the Bobcats continued to control much of the offensive pace, carrying a 31-22 advantage in shots into the second intermission.

With the game deadlocked at 1-1, the Dragons had an opportunity to seize control early in the final frame. Instead, special teams once again shifted the momentum in Blue Ridge’s favor. At 3:26, Nikolai Dulak broke free for a shorthanded breakaway and scored his first professional goal to give the Bobcats a 2-1 lead. Just 14 seconds later, Patricks Marcinkevics capitalized on another shorthanded breakaway following the ensuing faceoff, extending the Blue Ridge advantage to 3-1 and putting Columbus in an early two-goal hole.

The physicality continued throughout the third period, with Peeaychew assessed a major penalty for aggressor midway through the frame. Columbus successfully killed off the penalty, but the Dragons struggled to generate enough sustained offensive pressure to complete the comeback.

With Wakelyn pulled for the extra attacker, defenseman Lare Pahtayken found the back of the net to record his first goal of the season and bring Columbus within one. Despite the late push, the Dragons were unable to find the equalizer, as Blue Ridge held on for a 3-2 victory and a weekend sweep. The Bobcats finished with a 44-34 advantage in shots on goal.

The loss drops Columbus to 0-2-0 to begin the 2026-27 campaign. The River Dragons will return home next weekend to host the three-time defending Commissioner’s Cup champion Binghamton Black Bears for a two-game series at the Columbus Civic Center on Friday and Saturday.

Blue Ridge improves to 2-0-0 and will travel to Watertown next weekend for a pair of games against the Wolves.

DANBURY HAT TRICKS at WATERTOWN WOLVES

Wolves Fall in OT

By Connor LaLone

Watertown, NY - The Danbury Hat Tricks returned to the Northern Credit Union Community Arena on Saturday (10/17) for another battle with the 0-2 Watertown Wolves.

Danbury got things started with a goal that almost immediately followed a successful Wolves penalty kill, as Jordon Kromm deposited a Joe Santoro pass past Samuel Zgiet at 9:17 of the opening frame. Tristan Ehrie picked up a penalty for high-sticking at 10:18 and the Wolves took advantage. Bret Parker found the back of the net as Jake Schultz and Donovan Powell assisted.

In the second period, the Wolves would start at a two man disadvantage, and kill off both penalties before capitalizing again on an extra-skater situation, when Schultz and Peavey assisted Hunter Hall following a Josh Newburg penalty for holding. The Hat Tricks got back level at 6:20 with an even strength effort from Eli Rivers. Kevin Johnston and Grady Friedman assisted on the marker. Fan-favorite Brendan Hussey tallied two in quick succession, as Parker, Powell and Abdella all added assists. Both goals were borne of sheer effort, as Hussey forced a neutral zone turnover before playing a 2 two on one perfectly, and depositing the puck past Penton for his first. Xavier Abdella laid out to dive and keep a puck in the offensive zone before Parker won several puck battles and found Hussey for his second. Watertown would head into the third short-handed again, with 33 seconds remaining in a Demitris Christou hooking call, preventing Eli Rivers from getting a shot away on a breakaway.

Rivers did score on the power play just 30 seconds into the period, on assists from Friedman and Silverstein and picked up his hat trick goal at 15:07, also on the power play. Silverstein picked up another assist and Stefan Miklakos had a helper on the equalizer.

The game would remain tied through the end of regulation. Grady Friedman picked up the puck in his own end and deked to the front of the net before depositing his own rebound past Samuel Zgiet with the backhand to pick up the OT winner.

The Wolves will look to pick up their first win as they're back at home Friday and Saturday night for a couple of 7:05 puck drops.

BATON ROUGE KINGFISH at MONROE MOCCASINS

Brancheau Scores Pair; Triple Up Moccains

By Danny BeBock and Paige Stevens

Monroe, LA- Jason Brancheau scored a pair of goals as the Baton Rouge Kingfish defeated the Monroe Moccasins by the final count of 6-2 on Saturday night. With the loss Monroe drops their record to (2-2-0) on the season the Kingfish advance to (2-0-0).

The Kingfish were coming off a 6-2 win Friday night thanks to two goals from Jake Cox. Monroe forward Jared Christy and defenseman Jamie Dorsey were each suspended two games and forced to miss Saturday Night’s contest.

Despite a slow first period start with goals, both teams came to the ice aggressive and ready to play. The Kingfish broke the ice with the first goal of the game at 13:40 by Jason Brancheau. The Moccasins responded 40 seconds later with their first goal of the game by Corson Green (assisted by Fornaris, Schumacher) and added another goal with a top corner strike at 17:43 made by Samuel Gagnon (assisted by Keller, Pick). The Kingfish brought themselves onto level terms early in the second with the period’s lone goal from Tyler Williams at 5:36. Samuel Gagnon continued an inspired effort with multiple defensive stops leading to breaks for the Moccasins. Both teams played at a breakneck pace near the end of the period.

INDIANA SENTINELS at TOPEKA SCARECROWS

After a Late Scare, Topeka Triumphs Sweeping Opening Weekend 2-1

By Jon Kliment

Topeka, KS - Topeka and Indiana met for the second time this weekend. Just 24 hours removed from a big 2-0 victory to open their season the Scarecrows came in hungry for a chance to improve their record in front of the Topeka faithful.

It was tough to find a goal to kick things off as once again it took until the second period for a team to find the twine in the back of the net, but it was Tristen Wells netting his first in a Scarecrows jersey. Coming in on the rush Wells picked a corner and beat Cooper Olsen over the shoulder for the 1-0 lead 7:16 into the second period.

In the third period after a closing his hand on the puck call on Jacob Gagnon, Indiana finally put in a goal behind Sammy Bernard as Aaron Shahin backhanded a puck past the big goaltender to tie things up with 3:57 to go in the third. Topeka did not back down however as Gagnon found himself an open spot on the ice with seconds to go and received a pass from Trygve Many Guns he one-timed past Olsen with less than a second to go to clinch the regulation win for Topeka.

Bernard stopped 28 of 29 for the win, his second of the season.

Topeka returns home next Friday night October 23rd to take on the Monroe Moccasins.

Heartbreak in Topeka, Sents Lose 2-1 on Last Second Goal

By Andy Poetzinger

Topeka, KS - Last night, the Indiana Sentinels were handed their first loss of the season by one of their fiercest rivals, the Topeka Scarecrows. Everett Thompson and his crew were not thrilled with the way they performed in the final forty minutes of the game and wanted to have a more complete effort tonight.

The first period was very similar to what we saw last night with the teams trading chances back and forth, with no team really taking the reins. Some of that hatred we saw so many times last season started peaking through as Brady Estabrook ticked off an FPHL first with his first ever fight. He and Boston Bird went toe-to-toe with Estabrook getting the takedown.

It would stay a scoreless first period with the Sentinels leading nine to six in the shot category.

Period two continued the physicality and hatred as Aaron Shahin and Grant Coykendall dropped the gloves after a scrum in front of the Topeka net. Neither guy was able to get a decent shot as the linesman was attempting to intervene.

Scoring opened seven minutes into the period when the Scarecrows’ Tristan Wells tallied on a 2-on-1 break here he ripped a wrist shot glove side high on Cooper Olson to give Topeka the one goal lead.

That score would hold through 40 minutes of play. In the second, Topeka outshot the Sentinels 11 to 10, however the Sentinels carried the pace of play for the majority of the frame.

Play would open up significantly in the third period with plenty of scoring chances on either side. Both goaltenders stood tall with Cooper Olson making eleven saves and Sammy Bernard making nine stops in the third.

The Sentinels finally broke through the wall that is Sammy Bernard with a Powerade Powerplay tally from Aaron Shahin who caught a Ross Bartlett pass from the blue line. Shahin sent a no look backhander past Bernard on the blocker side to pick up his team leading third goal of the year and knot the game up at one.

The score would stay that way until the final seconds of the third period. With the Scarecrows buzzing all around the Sentinels zone, a pass from the corner found a wide-open Jacob Gagnon who unleashed a bullet over the glove of Cooper Olson.

After video review, it was deemed the puck had crossed the line with .4 seconds remaining in the period, and the Scarecrows would go on to win 2-1.

Shots were dead even at 29 in the hockey game. On the powerplay, the Sentinels went 1-for-5 on the man advantage, while the Scarecrows were held scoreless on four attempts.

The Sentinels look to regroup and head back on the road next week to visit their fiercest rival, the Port Huron Prowlers. Coverage starts with the Body Armor Pre-Game Show at 6:50 pm ET, and puck drop at 7:05 pm ET. You can catch it all on the Sentinels Hockey Network.

Fresno, CA - Despite a relentless offensive effort and a three-goal third period, the Fresno Falcons fell 6-3 to the Mid-South Monarchs on Saturday evening at Selland Arena, splitting the weekend series in front of 4,635 fans.

On a night celebrating Fresno Falcons history with the jersey retirement of Kris Porter, the Falcons generated a season-high 59 shots on goal but were unable to overcome Mid-South's opportunistic scoring attack.

Following Friday night's shutout victory, Fresno entered Saturday looking to complete the weekend sweep. The Falcons controlled much of the offensive pressure early, outshooting Mid-South 18-6 in the opening period. However, it was the Monarchs who broke through first, as Darion Benchich found the back of the net at 17:34 to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage heading into the intermission.

Mid-South extended its lead early in the second period when Emerson Emery capitalized on the power play at 2:10, putting the Monarchs ahead 2-0.

Despite continuing to generate scoring opportunities and holding a 30-16 advantage in shots through 40 minutes, Fresno entered the final frame searching for its first goal.

The Falcons finally broke through at 3:33 of the third period when Aaron Huffnagle scored off assists from Wynston Iserhoff and Houston Wilson, cutting the deficit to 2-1 and bringing the Selland Arena crowd to life.

However, Mid-South quickly responded just 30 seconds later, with Tyler Houmard restoring the two-goal advantage. The Monarchs added a shorthanded tally from Mike McBride at 8:14 before Benchich recorded his second goal of the evening at 11:42, extending the lead to 5-1.

Refusing to go quietly, Fresno continued pressing offensively, unleashing 29 shots in the final period alone.

Austin Albrecht converted on the power play at 16:32, assisted by Huffnagle and Josh Colten, to make it 5-2. With an extra attacker on the ice in the closing moments, Wilson added another Falcons goal at 19:40, with Albrecht and Carson Vance earning assists.

Mid-South's Frank Trazzera sealed the contest with an empty-net goal just 10 seconds later, securing the 6-3 victory.

Huffnagle, Albrecht, and Wilson each finished with a goal and an assist for Fresno, while the Falcons outshot the Monarchs by a commanding 59-25 margin.

Although the result did not go Fresno's way, Saturday's contest marked another memorable evening at Selland Arena as 4,635 fans gathered to celebrate the organization's storied history and honor Kris Porter.

With the weekend series now complete, Fresno will look to build on its offensive opportunities and return to the win column as the inaugural 2026-27 FPHL season continues.

Fresno, CA - The Monarchs and Falcons dropped the puck for the second time in as many days, as Mid-South looked to flip the script from the previous night and secure its first franchise win.

The first period was tight throughout, as only the Monarchs were able to get on the board. Darion Benchich wired home his second goal of the season to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead heading into the intermission.

The second period was identical to the first, as both goalies were tested, but only Skinner buckled. Emerson Emery buried a rebound in front on the power play to give Mid-South a 2-0 lead heading into the third period.

The Falcons answered early in the third when Houston Wilson threw a wild shot on goal to make it 2-1. The Monarchs then erupted for three straight goals, starting with newcomer Tyler Houmard. Mike McBride followed with his first goal of the season, backhanding the puck past Skinner. Benchich then scored his second goal of the game to extend the lead to 5-1. The Falcons scored back-to-back goals in the dying minutes, but Frank Trazzera put the icing on the cake with an empty net goal to seal a 6-3 victory.

Wyatt Friedlander was sensational, stopping 56 of the 59 shots he faced, while his opponent, Dysen Skinner, made 19 saves on 24 shots.
